“Hammond may be able to read a balance sheet but he appears ignorant of the invaluable service of brave individuals” – Kevan Jones MP

Kevan Jones MP, Labour’s Shadow Armed Forces Minister, said in response to reports that soldiers training to fight in Afghanistan have been sacked:

“This is as wrong as it is worrying.

“This flies against what is morally right as well as past government assurances.

“In government, Ministers have repeatedly promised no-one preparing to deploy to Afghanistan would be sacked, but just like their promise in opposition of a bigger army their word has been broken.

“Philip Hammond may be able to read a balance sheet but he appears ignorant of the invaluable service of brave individuals.

“This will hit morale, which is already in free-fall.

“The service community deserves greater respect and a full explanation. We need guarantees that no others who are either in, preparing to go or returning from Afghanistan have been or will be sacked.

“This is no way to treat members of our Armed Forces.”
