Jim Murphy MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to comments by General Sir David Richards, the Chief of the Defence Staff, on cuts to the UK Armed Forces, said:
“The head of UK Armed Forces has now said in public what many have been saying in private.
“Cuts to the Royal Navy mean we have no aircraft to fly from an aircraft carrier for years. Increased redundancies at all ranks mean our power overseas is limited.
“A rushed and flawed defence review means there is now a mismatch between national ambition and military capability.
“Ministers have made rushed and wrong-headed decisions where reform was required. A defence industrial strategy, procurement reform and deeper international collaboration are all now priorities for urgent ministerial action.”
