The Department for Work and Pensions rolled out the Veterans Interview Programme nationally on November 26th 2012. The DWP will send out guidance to all Job Centres on how to match service-leavers with employers operating the Veterans Interview Programme and how to support employers operating the programme. Jobcentre Plus advisers will be encouraging local employers to sign up to the Veterans Interview Programme.
The Veterans Interview Programme encourages employers to offer a guaranteed interview, or other form of increased employment support, to ex-Service men and women who apply for a job with them. It is a voluntary scheme which gives veterans a chance to show employers how their skills and experience could benefit their business. This is not a guaranteed jobs programme, but it will help improve their transition and resettlement to civilian life.
Ex-Service men and women have a huge amount to offer potential employers, with a wide range of experiences and skills arising from Service, including leadership, teamwork and organisation, and Labour believes we must all do more to provide additional support to help former Service personnel find employment.
The Labour Party launched VIP in July and have since been working with the DWP to make this a national scheme. From November 26th, Job Centres will maintain a list of employers who have signed up so that advisers can refer veterans to them.
Companies currently signed up to VIP include o2, John Lewis and New Look.
DWP will regularly get in touch with the participating companies to check the numbers of veterans who have used the scheme. DWP will issue annual figures with regards to VIP.
A lot of Job Centres maintain a caseload specifically for veterans, so when advisers are dealing with claimants in these caseloads, or other veteran claimants, they will be able to talk about employers who have signed up and make the links.
