Responding to the Secretary of State for Defence’s speech in Edinburgh, Scottish Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary Jim Murphy MP, said:
“Defence in Scotland faces a double danger from Government. Neither the Tory Government’s cuts or Nationalists’ plans for independence will do any good for Scottish defence employment, prowess or capability.
“Scotland knows that the Tories are getting it wrong on defence but the last people who can make a sensible criticism are the SNP as their policy on future British Forces numbers based in Scotland is zero.
“Scotland forms a crucial part of our Armed Forces which should not be jeopardised by rushed cuts or a rush to the exit from the UK.
“Defence jobs are vital to the Scottish economy and yet independence puts thousands of jobs at risk. The SNP policy is based on assertion and presumption none of which constitutes a proper defence policy for Scotland.”
