Jim Murphy MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to warnings from the German minister of defence that Britain’s standing as a military power could be jeopardised by leaving the EU, said:
“David Cameron’s rhetoric on Europe is creating real uncertainty amongst UK businesses and beyond. These latest comments by the German Defence Minister will add to the worries that many here at home have that the UK’s influence in Europe is on the wane.
“As the US shifts its focus to Asia Pacific it’s in the UK’s national interest that we co-operate more closely on defence with other European nations. Whether over counter-piracy, cyber or tackling organised crime the European Union is vital for UK national security.
“NATO remains our primary military alliance and demands reform, but in an era of global threats and limited resource further co-operation with European partners over procurement, interoperability and research can benefit UK defence.
“Shared threats demand shared solutions to protect our national defence capability.”
